Mount Apo is a must-see if you book Davao flights. The Philippines’ tallest mountain stands nearly 9,824 feet (3,000 metres) above sea level and is visible from most parts of the city. It’s a challenging climb, but it offers unbeatable views across the Filipino countryside.

You can arrange organised treks up the mountain from Davao, usually including food and camping accommodation. The round trip takes three to four days. You’ll pass along forested paths, hot springs, and crystal lakes. There are several different trails up to the top with different levels of difficulty – the local guides can advise on which one is best suited to your fitness level.

Fly to Davao and you’ll land at Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO), seven-and-a-half miles from the city centre. You can arrange an airport transfer with Etihad or take your pick from taxis or public transport. If you take a taxi, make sure it’s an official metered taxi.

The Kadayawan Festival in the third week of August is when Davao’s people give thanks for the harvest and celebrate their culture and traditions. Expect a magnificent street parade, great food and a friendly atmosphere as Davao’s people happily share their celebration with visitors.

The locals travel in colourful shared taxis called Jeepneys. These are cheap and can be crowded, but they’re a fun and unique experience for tourists. For local short hops, the tricycles (similar to tuk-tuks elsewhere in Asia) are also popular. Metered taxis are also very good value.

Seafood is plentiful in Davao, and it’s renowned for tuna. Many stalls will sell the catch of the day, freshly fried. Try pakfry, twice-cooked deep-fried tuna tail.

How long do people stay in Davao?

Davao’s main tourist sites can be seen in a couple of days. But there is much more to the city than its centre. If you want to take a trek to Mount Apo, you’ll need at least four days. Most visitors will also want at least a couple of days on the beach. Allow seven to 10 days to experience everything the city has to offer.

What is there to do in Davao at night?

Head to Roxas night market for excellent shopping and street food. The atmosphere is lively and friendly, and it’s a great place to get to know the city and its people. It’s busiest at the weekends. For a more relaxed option, try People’s Park, a popular spot for locals and tourists.
