The main airport in Sri Lanka is Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport. It’s located around 20 miles (32 kilometres) from Colombo on the west coast of Sri Lanka and there are bus and taxi services available to transfer you to the city. From the airport, you’ll be able to reach the vibrant capital within an hour.

There are many ornate Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka – the most famous of which is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa.

Found in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s second largest city, this grandiose structure houses one of Buddha’s teeth and is among the most sacred sites in the country.

A 10-day festival featuring dancers, musicians and fire breathers is held in July or August each year as visitors flock to the city from across the world.

Sri Lanka is a haven for surfers, boasting sandy beaches, azure oceans and incredible waves.

You’ll find surfing for all abilities along Sri Lanka’s shores. Visit Hikkaduwa on the south-west or Weligama on the south coast, for waves that suit beginners and experienced surfers alike all-year-round.

Weather patterns alternate on the island. While the ocean at one side is lively enough for surfing, the other is calmer. On the south, the best surfing period is between November and May – on the east, between April and October.
